Writing collaboratively is an essential when creating projects and group papers in higher education. Further, collaborative writing skills are transferrable to writing on the Internet, digital storytelling, and job scenarios in the coroporate world. Diverse writing experiences on the web may help you gain that competetive edge when searching for a career.
For this project, our class will create an entire wiki site dedicated to a specified topic. In a groups of three, create a wiki page which focuses on a specific aspect of that topic. By the end of the class, we will have generated an original resource which students may continue to be part of after the class is officially over.
Create something that you will be proud of as this wiki page will be included in your final portfolio. Please note each and every one of you are responsible to monitor all content posted on this wiki. If you are not pleased with the quality or content that another group posted, create a discussion thread about why you think it should be changed. If no one replies, it becomes your responsibility to change it accordingly.
Procedure
1. Select a topic as a class.
2. Your instructor will create a wiki site for that topic.
3. Form a group of three. Your group will create a page for the wiki that will focused on a specific subtopic.
4. To generate content at the same time, use Google Docs. Being that many of you have a Google account, this should be a simple process (although I will demonstrate in class).
5. Paste content from your Google document onto the page you created on the wiki.
6. Conduct a short presentation on the page you created.
7. Our class will vote on the top pages.
8. Complete an evaluation of your group members.
Criteria
900 word minimum (approx. 300 words/student, although I strongly encourage you to contribute more)
3 images (although I encourage you to contribute more)
1 digital story (use Meograph to create this story and embed it on your wiki page)
*BONUS: any other media, such as a video, image, podcast, etc., may be counted as bonus material.
Evaluation
Our wiki project will not look like a normal writing assignment, and your pages will generally provide you with a significant amount of freedom and creativity. For this reason, it becomes unbelievably difficult to create any kind of rubric for grading. That said, I will be grading according to the following general criteria:
*BONUS: 3 pts for the wiki page/group that recieves the highest number of votes (2 pts for second place; 1 pt for third)
9-10 – The page exceeds expectations of the assignment. The writing is interesting and engaging. Text and media are incorporated effectively (aesthetically as well), and the writing is clear, logical, and free of errors. When citing, the writer leaves a footnote in the appropriate area.
6-8 – The post meets expectations of the assignment. The writing shows engagement in the material, but displays particular areas for improvement. Text and media are incorporated effectively, but there are minor errors in either writing or citing appropriately.
5 or below – The post fails to meet expectations of the page. The writing displays either a lack of engagement or an ineffective use of text and media. The writing may display some errors in clarity, logic, or citations.
Overall Evaluation
Your group will recieve one grade for the project. As a general procedure, you will evaluate your group members before turning in and presenting your projects.
Remember that your wiki project will account for 10 points (or 10%) of your overall grade in the course.
